Head of School Weekly Update
Dear Odyssey Community,
It was wonderful hanging out with so many of you at our Pancake Breakfast. We look forward to hosting more events on weekends to get our community together. If you have suggestions for events that you and your family would like, please let us know!
The winter weather this year has already caused us to miss five days of school. Our plan is to wait until winter is over to make a final determination about adding days/hours back to our school schedule to account for lost contact hours with students. However, we have decided on one change: February 27 was scheduled as a teacher work day. It will now be a regular school day.
The calendar itself has been a topic of discussion with our leadership team. We want you to know our academic calendar as far in advance as possible; however, it is common that some of the days change for a variety of reasons (especially teacher work days). Our past practice has been to publish a printer-ready calendar far in advance, with a disclaimer that some of the dates might change. Unfortunately, what has happened is that this original calendar gets printed and is assumed to be the final version, even when we send out amendments to the online and printed calendars.
Our new practice will be to announce dates for the next school year that are fixed: the first week of school, fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter vacation, spring break, and the last week of school. Also, our online calendar linked on our website at http://www.odysseycommunity.org/calendar will be kept up to date and any major changes will be described in the newsletter. No system is perfect; we hope this approach meets the needs of families and preserves our ability to be nimble when circumstances change.
