Fifth and Sixth Grade Newsletter

Math 5 & 6:

Topics: spiraling math topics in all areas of math, on grade level + review of previous years in geometry, measurement & data, number & operations- base 10 & fractions, and operations & algebraic thinking.

Science 5:

Fifth graders have begun their final unit of study for the year- ecosystems! Yesterday, they created bracelets with biotic & abiotic parts of our little garden ecosystem at school.

Science 6:

Sixth graders are learning about the earth. One way that scientists support their theory of Pangea is through geological and fossil evidence. Today, students hunted through sediment from the phosphate mine in Aurora, NC. Some fossils students found may be as old as 20 million years, from the Miocene.

Language Arts 5:

Just finished Holes, wrapped up with a discussion about symbolism, and we are now watching the movie.


Language Arts 6:

Reading The Giver, discussing related themes: cultural rites of passage, utopia/dystopia, and individuality versus conformity.


Social Studies 5:

Wrapped up the American Revolution unit, moving on to the U.S. Constitution and studying other forms of government.


Social Studies 6:

Ancient Rome: learning about forms of government, analyzing arguments, and the ethics of gladiator fights!
