Our very own Michael Fishbach (Odyssey High’s Natural History of the World’s Cetaceans teacher) recently returned from duties as a guest speaker for the Jan. 2-9, 2012 National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions cruise on the Sea of Cortez. This is a highly prestigious position!

Michael made presentations to the guests and crew about whales and his non-profit work to help save them. On this voyage he saw blue, fin, humpback, and short finned pilot whales as well as a variety of dolphins, and he swam with juvenile California sea lions (who tried to tear the tip of his snorkel off) and a green sea turtle.

During the high school’s second semester, Michael’s Cetaceans class will take a three-day field trip to Beaufort, NC to visit the primary NC bottle nose dolphin researcher. Michael hopes to take all of the students out via the research boat to see how the dolphins in our coastal waters are studied. The class will also see a 35 foot sperm whale skeleton that is being articulated for eventual display in the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort.

Congratulations, Michael!

Odyssey’s summer Program in Spain consists of a three-week stay in Spain. The first week is spent in Madrid, with visits of medieval Toledo and the Castle of Segovia, which is said to have inspired Walt Disney. The second and third weeks are a total immersion program in which our students are hosted by Spanish families. Visit our sister school at www.granadacollege.es

Upon acceptance into Odyssey’summer Program in Spain, students are matched and will be able to correspond with Spanish students from Granada College, our sister school in Granada, Spain. While staying with their Spanish host families, our students will also be taking classes at Granada College. Some examples of courses offered are: language, culture and civilization, arts, history, math and science, music, theater, cooking, flamenco and salsa dancing, and sports. Students are also involved in Granada College’s summer camp working with small Spanish children in fun and creative activities. For this service, they receive a certificate and earn 10 hours of community service.

Beautiful Granada is not only host to the famed Alhambra Palace, but is conveniently located within a short distance to both the beach and the mountains of Sierra Nevada. Weekend excursions include visits to the famous Giralda in Sevilla, and Cordova’s unique Mosque-Cathedral. Odyssey’s Summer Program in Spain is open to students aged 14 -18. The trip will take place June 16 – July 7, 2011. The cost of the program is sliding scale -from $1,950 to $2,950 covering everything except airfare.

The program is supervised by two Odyssey School chaperones, including Mario Alvarez, Spanish teacher at Odyssey, who is very well-connected with Granada College, “Granada is my parents hometown and our family friend and connection, Linda Hollinger, Chair of the Modern Language Department, is our contact person. She is very good at matching our students with her own students, based on mutual age, interests, and hobbies. Granada College is THE IVY-LEAGUE bilingual school in the south of Spain. Linda will pair our students with the best Spanish families, whom she knows very well, as Granada College is a close tight community, similar in that respect to our Odyssey Community. Having my own family in Granada provides a nice, reassuring safety net for our parents,” says Alvarez.
For more information, please contact Mario at malvarez@odysseycommunity.org or call (305) 968-7464.
