Middle School Homeroom, Language Arts & Social Studies Teacher
Growing up in a small mountain town of Colorado, Vanessa learned to appreciate the great outdoors and the value of community at a young age, which is partly why she has come to love it here in Asheville!
After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2010 with a degree in English Literature, Vanessa decided to pursue her passion for teaching English, as well as fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling abroad. Vanessa volunteered to teach English in Peru and traveled through the country alone for over three months, which is an experience she is forever grateful for. This time teaching abroad confirmed her passion for teaching and Vanessa decided to return to the University of Colorado at Boulder and earn her teaching certificate. Vanessa began teaching full time in Nederland, Colorado where she worked with at-risk youth. It was during this time that Vanessa began to develop a deep connection with a personal practice of mindfulness and began to experiment with ways to incorporate it into her curriculum at school.
In 2015 she returned to Peru to complete a 200-hour yoga teacher training and has been fortunate enough to be able to share this practice with her students. Vanessa loves teaching because of the connection she has with her students and the fact that she is always actively learning alongside them. Vanessa is passionate about connecting students with the community and sharing her love for learning.
In her free time, Vanessa enjoys snowboarding, backpacking, practicing yoga, spending time outdoors with her dog Jaxson, and is always looking for new and exciting experiences.
