Allison Mae Hughes
Middle School Homeroom, Mathematics and Science Teacher
Allison earned a B.S. in Outdoor Education from Georgia College and State University a few years before moving to North Carolina, where she completed her teaching licensure at UNCA. Allison also studied environmental science and history during her undergraduate work and will spend this summer studying to add mathematics credentials to her resume, demonstrating her dedication to lifelong learning. She loves incorporating an interdisciplinary approach using all of the disciplines she studies: engaging hands-on activities, logic, and team building in her lessons. Her own educational journey provides a foundation for her belief that all subjects are interconnected and woven into everyday life.
Allison has always known teaching is her calling, and she greatly appreciates being part of a community that values small classroom sizes and the strong relationships that are the foundation for deep and meaningful learning. She loves guiding students in their personal inquiry, discovery of self and their own personal passions. Allison has a deep love of science, as it cultivates exploration and curiosity in students, and of mathematics for its versatility, applicability, and allure.
When she is not teaching, Allison enjoys canoeing, cycling, backpacking, trail running, and leading her Girl Scout troop. She also spends her time crafting, making brunch, taking road trips, and curling up with a book and some tea.
